Week 4 of the high school football season begins with a preview of District 8’s championship game later this fall.
Undefeated powerhouse Westinghouse will take on defending champions Alderdis at Couples Stadium on Thursday at 7pm.
The Bulldogs seem to be the City League class this season. They are already 2-0 in district play, 4-0 overall, and rank 3rd in the latest Trib HSSN Class 2A State Rankings.
Westinghouse outscored their four opponents 193-44 and beat City League foes Perry and University Prep by a combined score of 114-18.
After three losses in their first non-conference game last week, Allderdice finally started their winning ways, defeating Perry 40-6 in the Dragons City League opener.
Last year, Westinghouse beat Alderdis 41-12 in the regular season, but the Dragons defeated the Bulldogs 14-0 in the City League title game.
These programs have met in the City League championship game for the second year in a row, with the Dragons winning last fall and the Bulldogs winning gold in 2020.
Alderdis and Westinghouse have also combined to win the last five City League football titles.
Women’s Singles Final Set
The stage was set for the first WPIAL gold to be distributed on Thursday at Bethel Park, where the women’s singles tennis championship was set.
In Class 3A, top seed Mia Williams won both matches on Wednesday before taking on second-seeded Upper St. Clair’s Maggie Steef at 1pm.
Pentrafford University freshman Williams beat Auckland Catholic’s Adelaide Kreuter 10-0 in the quarterfinals and beat Shady Side Academy’s Nicole Poltinnokov 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Senior Steef won three games on Wednesday, beating North Hills’ Ellie Kim 10-6, Bethel Park’s Lily Sierka 10-3 in the quarterfinals, and North Allegheny’s Sara Fernandez in the semifinals. moved forward. 6-4, 6-3.
Williams and Steef have secured their place in the PIAA singles tennis tournament, but the winner of the consolation match between Portinikov and Fernandez will also qualify.
In Class 2A, defending champion and top-seeded Sewickley Academy’s Ashley Close will try again after earning a spot in the finals against third-seeded Nicole Kempton.
The junior close drew a bye in the first round, beating Greensburg Central Catholic’s Sasha Hoffmann 10-0 in the quarterfinals and Winchester Thurston’s Cecilia Gurgel 6-0, 6-3 in straight sets.
Kempton, a senior, defeated Quaker Valley’s Joyce Ollawaye 10-2 in the first round, beat Beaver’s Chloe DeSanzo 10-1 in the quarterfinals, and defeated second-seeded Emily Greb in straight sets. Knockout in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-3.
Close and Kempton have qualified for the PIAA singles tennis tournament, joining the winner of Thursday’s 2A consolation match between Grugel and Gleb.

Another busy night unfolded on the pitch of the WPIAL Boys’ Soccer, competing for first place in one section of Class 4A.
Peters Township visits Canon McMillan on Thursday in a battle for the top spot in Sections 2-4A.
Both Indians and Big Macs are 6 to 1 in this section. PT is 7-1 overall while CM checks in with a 7-2 record.
Peters Township’s only loss of the season came 1-0 at home to Cannon McMillan on 30 August. Since then, the Indians have won six in a row and recorded three straight shutouts.
Canon-McMillan lost to Mt. Lebanon in the only section following their big win over Peters Township. Since then, the Big Mac has also won six in a row with four shutouts in a row.
