men’s golf
ASU Men’s Golf was held at Olympia Field, Illinois over the weekend to play in the Fighting Illini Invitational. The Sun Devils finished fourth with his 4-over-par aggregate score and his 9-under par, 13 shots behind tournament winner Stanford.
ASU Senior Riggs Johnston was a standout performer for the Sun Devils. He finished 5-under in his three-day tournament and finished fourth on the final leaderboard.
Freshman Michael Mjsaaseth was able to qualify for the first team tournament as the Sun Devil after being called up to the lineup. He finished 6-over-par, placing 31st on the weekend.
Associate head coach Thomas Sutton said, “I’m very excited about Michael… very excited to have him join the lineup. He’s playing great golf right now.
Sophomore Preston Summerhayes was the only other Sun Devil to make the top 20 over the weekend. He finished the week tied for 17th with his score of three overs.
The men’s golf team will have a two-week vacation before the next tournament when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas to play in the Colonial University Tournament.
women’s golf
ASU’s women’s golf team traveled to Lake Elmo, Minnesota last week to compete in the ANNIKA Intercollegiate Tournament, finishing eighth with an overall score of 12 over par after three days of competition.
The finish went big thanks to two top 20 finishes in junior Ashley Menne and sophomore Karin Rosholt. The two tied for 3 overs and he finished the tournament tied for 19th.
Head coach Missy Farr-Kay said, “After a slow start on day one, we’ve played much better the last two days. We have some work to do before we’re out again in two weeks. This young The team is hungry and ready to gear up for the next tournament.”
The Sun Devils also finished in the top half with two other golfers. Sophomore Grace Summerhayes finished tied for 26th and freshman Beth Coulter finished tied for 29th.
The team’s next tournament is two weeks away when they travel to Wilmette, Illinois for the Windy City Classic.
cross country
The ASU men’s and women’s cross-country season kicked off on Saturday with head coach Lynn Godfrey’s ASU coaching debut at the UC Riverside Invitational.
ASU senior Vincent Mauri shines in the men’s 8K. He trailed his second place by 20 seconds to take first place overall with a 23:25.7 mark and his six other Sun Devils in the top 100 put him in eighth place. Achieved a team finish. Senior Lena Leblanc stood out for the women’s team as she clocked 20:44.7 over the 6km, placing her 16th overall. On the women’s team, she finished 20th out of 31 teams.
The Sun Devils will host another competition for runners to qualify for the Pac-12 Championship. ASU will travel to UA to attend the Dave Murray Invitational on September 30th.
Football
The Sun Devils defeated the Grambling State Tigers, 5-0, in Tempe on Wednesday, September 14th.
Graduate student forward Nicole Douglas, who just broke the goal record, scored a hat-trick in the first half to become the most career points-scorer in ASU football history, surpassing Stacey Tulloch’s 50 points.
The Sun Devils had control of the ball and finished with 33 shots and 5 goals.
The Tigers struggled to move the ball against the energetic Sun Devils. With conference play approaching, the ASU can tweak a few details.
The ASU wrapped up their undefeated non-conference stint on September 18 with a 5–0 win over the Toledo Rockets.
The Sun Devils dominated the game with 21 shots on goal compared to the Rockets’ shots. They also shared an abundance of goals in all five of his goals from various players.
With three goals in 13 minutes in the second half of the match, Toledo had no hope of coming back.
ASU will begin conference play on Friday, September 23 at 3:00 PM PST against the University of Colorado, Boulder.
volleyball
After a rough weekend at the Baylor Invitational, the Sun Devil volleyball team is back in Texas for the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock. ASU finished the weekend 1-2 at Lubbock, repeating their performance last weekend in Waco.
On Friday, ASU dropped both games on day one, losing to Southern Methodist University and hometown Texas Tech University. The Sun Devils lost 3-2 in a close matchup against SMU in the first game. The game is his fourth five-set match of the season for ASU, and the Sun Devils are 2-2 in such a match.
Game 2 saw the Sun Devils put up a very strong match against their hometown Red Raiders, scoring at least 21 points in each set. Unfortunately for the Sun Devils, they lost the game in straight sets and he lost 3-0 to Texas Tech.
A 3-1 win over Oral Roberts put ASU back on track on Saturday. After winning the first set, ASU defeated Oral Roberts 25-8 in the second set. After the Golden Eagles won a close third set, ASU closed the weekend with a comfortable 25-15 win in the fourth set to secure the win.
The Sun Devils are now eyeing a big rivalry showdown in Tucson, taking on UA on Wednesday at 7pm MST.
