Georgia continues to be the unanimously #1 team in CBS Sports 131, the overall ranking of all FBS programs. After Week 3 results across college football, much of the top 10 remained the same, but there has been a lot of movement elsewhere as the sports landscape begins to shape toward the heart of conference play. I have.
The top seven teams in last week’s rankings (Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, USC and Clemson) maintained their positions after winning their respective status. But while the sport’s top tier seems solidified for now, there are a handful of worthy contenders that are beginning to knock on the door of elite status.
Kentucky (8th) and Oklahoma State (9th) both moved up two places into the top 10 and improved to 3-0 over the weekend. Victories against both FCS teams didn’t spark much movement, but both teams had already won power fives and were impressive early in the season, so look at the Wildcats and Cowboys. It should come as no surprise that in 2022 they will start making their claims as an elite team.
A stronger statement was made by Penn State, who rolled into Auburn and dominated the Tigers with a 41-12 win. The Nittany Lions were the team CBS Sports 131 voters supported more than the other top 25 voters. He sat in 15th place before they entered the week. As a top 10 team in the rankings, he finished 10th, ahead of Tennessee and Arkansas.
The two most notable additions to the top of the rankings come from the Pac-12, where Oregon and Washington started the weekend outside the top 30 of the rankings, after an impressive win in Week 3. I climbed a dozen or more places on each jump. The Huskies moved up 15 places by easily beating BYU, and moved up 24 places after the Huskies’ win over Michigan State saw him improve 3-0. - No. 30 Kansas (+26): Rock choke! Lance Leipold kept Kansas football inside the top 30 after his 3–0 starts that included his wins at both Virginia and Houston.
- No.38 Duke (+25): Our voters are particularly responsive to the victory over North Carolina A&T, as they look to the 3-0 Duke team playing with great confidence in Mike Elko’s debut season as head coach. I don’t think so. Then there’s the aforementioned 3-0 Jayhawks showdown in Lawrence, Kansas.
- No. 17 Washington (+24): The Huskies cap could be Pac-12’s biggest challenger to USC. Michael Penix is playing at a high level and his reunion with Kalen DeBoer is going as everyone expected. Even better, Washington found the offensive spark it lacked last year while maintaining the relentless defensive pressure that was a trademark of the CFP-era program.
- 16. Oregon (+15): Since losing to Georgia in the season opener, Oregon has found its rhythm aggressively with the Bonix and appears to be snapping closer to its preseason expectations of fielding the Pac-12 title contenders in 2022.
- No. 39 LSU (+15): After a season-opening loss to Florida State, voters are quickly starting to regain some of the credit they lost to the Tigers after a hard-fought 31-16 victory over Mississippi State.
- No. 29 Miami (-16): The Hurricanes had a tough fight at Texas A&M, but considering only Bethune Cookman and the Southern Miss won, the Hurricanes’ high ranking is indisputable. This is still a quality team as voters stay within the top 30. However, adjustments were being made after the loss at College Station, Texas.
- No. 43 Kansas (-16): Kansas’ growing confidence in 2022 peaked after a four-touchdown victory over Missouri last week and came to a sudden halt with a home loss to Tulane.
- No. 41 Mississippi (-18): After making the top 25 last week, the Bulldogs saw a pretty big adjustment after a 31-16 road loss at LSU. Texas A&M and Arkansas’ visit to Starkville, Mississippi in his early October could restore the rankings.
- No. 34 Michigan (-20): While the rankings rose significantly in Washington, the Spartans were almost the opposite after their loss in Seattle. We’ll have more to say about whether the results reflect Washington or Michigan in the coming weeks, but for now, Sparty is down in the rankings.
