The No. 4 (Class 3A) Ballard Girls Cross Country Team placed 2nd in Class A at the 42nd Annual Mike Carr Invitational on September 12th at Ballard Golf and Country Club in Huxley.
Led by a commanding individual victory from top-ranked Peitin Noé, the Bomber Girls scored 70 points, five points ahead of the Indianola team ranked 14th in 4A, and Adele DeSoto ranked second in 3A. The Minburn team finished 2 out of 10 with a 14 point lead. the team that scored. Pella, fifth in the 3A, won with 62 points.
The Ballard Boys were 8th out of 11 teams with 227 points. In the 3A he was rated second for Perak for his team, where he scored 39 points, easily beating first-placed North Spoke’s score of 74.
The Collins-Maxwell Women’s Cross Country Team had their best performance of the season at the Linville-Surrey Invitational in Surrey on September 15th.
The Spartans scored 65 points, only Perakristian’s 48 points among the 6 teams to score in the competition.
Collins Maxwell Boys, 18th in 1A, were 4th out of 6 teams with 81 points. Pera Christian, who finished 11th in 2A, also won the men’s team title with 39 points, while North Mahaska, who was 9th in 1A, had his team second with his 53 points.
The Ballard volleyball team lost to Boone in four sets on Sept. 13, defeated Carlisle in five sets on Sept. 15 at the Raccoon River Conference, and played Saturday 2-2 at the Ballard Invitational in Huxley. After finishing, they were 9-6 this season.
The Bombers lost the first two sets to Boone by scores of 25-18 and 25-21, won the third by a margin of 25-19, and dropped the fourth by a decision 25-17. They fell behind in his 25-19 and 25-23 losses against Carlisle by two sets, but rebounded to win the next two sets by winning 25-11 and 25-23. At the Ballard Invitational, the Bombers swept Woodward-Granger (21-12, 21-17) and Grand View Christian (21-11, 21-14). Ballard lost to Perak (21-14, 21-19) while Des Moines’ Christian his team scored his first in 3A (22-20, 21-13) in his two other sets. .
The Collins-Maxwell volleyball team ended a 12-game losing streak to start the season sweeping the Iowa Star Conference South Division foes, the Valley Lutherans. The Spartans won by scores of 25-10, 25-17, 25-16, improving him to 1-12 in the season and 1-4 in the ISC South.

Peitin Noe, Annika Larson Shine at Mike Carr Invitational
Noe continued to stay away from the rest of the 3A women’s field with her performance at the Mike Carr Invitational.
The defending 3A individual state champion and state 5k record holder broke 18 minutes at Huxley on a hot afternoon. She finished her 5km in her 17:45.4.
Noé’s time was 1 minute and 21.2 seconds ahead of ADM’s Geneva Timmermann, who is currently ranked 3rd in the 3A.
Sophomore Anika Larson had a breakout race finishing fourth as Ballard’s individual. Larson finished second behind Noe and Timmerman with a time of 19:37.6 in Class A at the Car Invitational where she placed 3rd, before finishing 3rd in 3A where she finished 8th in the individual rankings.
“Obviously I’m very happy with Peitin and Anika’s race,” said Ballard head coach Scott Barth. “Definitely the best one-two punch of the tournament.”
Ava Vance finished 11th in 20:49.0, Brynn Wlson in 21:54.3 in 27th and Ava Richardson in 21:54.6 in 28th to score the bomber girls.
“Given the tough team we faced, we couldn’t complain too much and came in second,” Barth said. I know we have to work hard to get the state title, we need to get 3 to 5 runners closer to 1 and 2 runners. I’m sure of it. We can do it.”
Ballard has one runner in the Top 40 in Class A competition during the men’s race for the national team. Seth Penkook finished 32nd in his 5km with a time of 18:10.5.
Freshmen Max Davidson and Jaden Leland were 43rd and 49th for the Bombers with times of 18:40.9 and 19:06.5 respectively. Trent Payne and Logan Huntrods finished 56th with times of 19:32.8 and 19:45.1 respectively and he entered 57th, Bomber rounding out his boys’ scoring.
The Ballard boys were hit hard when top runner Austin Schoen had to drop two-thirds of the race due to a calf injury.
“All things considered, it was a good race for us, but not our best of the season,” said Barth. “Losing Austin took quite a toll on the scoring department. Seth ran a respectable race and Max continued to impress. Overall standings as we struggled to advance the rest of the pack. connected to.”
North spoke Zak Spora won the Class A men’s individual with a time of 16:05.4. Des Moines Christian’s Aaron Fynaardt won Class B with the fastest men’s overall time of 15:59.1.

The Collins-Maxwell Women’s Cross Country Team placed four runners in the top 20 in the Linville-Surrey Invitational.
The Spartans beat Eddieville-Blakesburg-Fremont by one point to finish second in the women’s team standings.
Triona Scott continued her great season with the Spartans with a time of 24:04 for 10th place. Cypress Ericsson was 12th in 24:32, Chloe Weirson was 19th in 25:15 and Asiln Davis was 20th in 25:23.
Sarah Tschantz was the last Collins-Maxwell runner to score points in the women’s race. She came to work at 26:12 and placed 24th.
The Collins-Maxwell boys were led by another outstanding individual effort from lead runner Ethan House.
House, who ranked 18th individually in 1A and the school’s 5k record holder, was second at Linville Surrey with a time of 17:55. Pera Christian’s Carden Van Wingarden won in 17:25.
Hunter Lee was the second Spartan to cross the finish line in 21st place with a time of 20:27. Isaiah Hill finished 24th in 20:55, Silas Kimberley in 26th in 20:57 and Austin Hennick in 28th in 22:03 as the other runners scored for the Spartan Boys.
First RRC win for Ballard volleyball team
The Ballard volleyball team’s win over Carlisle was their first conference victory of the season. The Bombers improved to 1-4 in the conference with the win.
Memphis Inglet had 20 kills and 5 blocks against the Wildcats, while Brooklyn Baumgardner had 12 kills and 9 blocks. Alliyah Thompson had 7 blocks and 5 kills, Kate Miller had 7 kills, and Brenna Baumgardner had 6 kills and blocks.
Hayley Flanders had 15 digs and four aces, Riley Shelder had 10 digs and two aces, Riley Akersen had 33 assists and two aces, and Allie Baker had 22 assists and two aces.
Ballard lost to Boone Inglett and Brooklyn Baumgardner with 10 each, Brenna Baumgardner with 7, and Thompson and Miller with 4. Brooklyn Baumgardner had 7 blocks, Brenna Baumgardner had 6 blocks and Thompson had 5 blocks.
Payton Askelsen had 22 digs and four aces while Riley Askelsen had 32 assists.
At the Ballard Invitational, Inglett had 30 kills, Riley Askelsen had 39 assists, Baker had 22 assists and Payton Askelsen had 23 digs. Brooklyn Baumgardner finished with 12 blocks of 8 kills, Brenna Baumgardner finished with 10 blocks of 8 kills, and Thompson finished with 10 blocks of 5 kills.

The young Collins-Maxwell volleyball team has endured hardships heading into the start of the 2022 season.
The Spartans didn’t win a set in any of their 12 games to face the Valley Lutherans.
But it all came to fruition on September 15th. Collins-Maxwell pulled off a convincing win after an 8.8% efficiency he recorded an impressive 17 aces with 14 kills, 26 digs and 73 serves.
Marissa Boege scored five kills and a dig each, while Collins Maxwell scored four aces to take the win. Hayley Merryman finished with 6 assists, 4 aces and digs, 2 kills, Vivian Curler had 4 kills, Peyton Steele had 6 digs and 3 aces, and Kiera Ruiz Genovese finished with 4 digs and 3 aces. Ella Steward scored her 3 digs and her 2 kills and an ace, Gracie Leslie scored her 1 dig and a dig and an ace, and Hannah Kimberly scored her 3 digs .
