scoop Boasting a bustling downtown with shops, restaurants and community events, the village of Williston Park sells homes so quickly that they often don’t hit the market. “When you hear someone say they want to sell their home, it goes up for sale without anyone knowing,” says Bob Mitchell, president of the Williston Park Civic Association.
The village keeps residents busy with Memorial Day, 4th of July and Halloween parades, and hosts 9/11 and Veterans Day commemorations and Operation Santa Claus.
Once used by Machinnock Indians for hunting and camping, the area was settled by Henry Willis in 1675 and soon became known as Williston for his growing family. Much of it retained its rural character until the Long Island Railroad pulled it into town two centuries later.
In 1926, the community east of the railroad became East Williston and the west became Williston Park. In the new village he purchased 195 acres of land and developer William Chatlos built nearly 1,000 of his simple two-story wooden homes, which he named Happiness Homes. Many of them still exist.
In the early 20th century, the village was home to many police officers, firefighters and teachers working in the city, who were attracted to the area’s convenient commute by public transport. Travel time from East Williston Station to Penn Station is approximately 45 minutes.
“The house was built without a driveway because there weren’t many cars,” Mitchell says, noting the curb cuts and garage a few years later.
According to Christine Lovell of Willistons Coach Realtors, the village has two distinct areas. The street bears the name of the college, there are many Chatros Colonials, and when it hits the market, the renovated and expanded homes go from $550,000 to $900,000.
